We purchased this set in Oct 2008 at our local Best Buy (incidentally at the 9 price that Amazon has today in 2009) and are very happy with it. Picture is fantastic, controls easy to use. Our cable company switched our HD cable box from a component output to HDMI, and man, did the picture get even better.

We also use an Apple TV connected to this television via HDMI, that looks great as well. Great fun to surf YouTube right on the TV, and the quality is actually pretty decent. We’ve rented and purchased HD movies on the Apple TV and they look fantastic as well.

Even though it is only 720p the picture looks great for my aging eyes, and we use it in a large living room seated at least 8 feet back. I’m not sure we could tell a difference between 720p and 1080p anyway. Great way to save a few bucks.

There is an optical audio output, so you can send the audio from your HDMI sources out to your receiver as well. We don’t use the speakers on the TV, we run everything through our Onkyo, which also sounds great.

The main cons:

This set is light on inputs; only 2 component inputs on the back, 2 HDMI inputs on the back, and one HDMI on the front. With more and more gear using HDMI you might have to snake a cable to the front and leave the little door open. Minor inconvenience, as we don’t have ours wall-mounted.

Also, this thing is rated for almost 500 watts of power when it’s on. I did notice our power bill went up a little bit when we switched from our 19″ tube to this monster. But the picture is great and worth the power premium. (I prefer plasma over LCD)

By the way, this is our only TV, and we’re glad we picked this model.

So you are looking for a brand of HDTV?

Before you start talking about what HDTV.

In essence, your HDTV's innovative technology that is much clearer than the old TV. To take advantage of higher resolution, it needs an HD signal (or at least receive a digital signal … It is a basic service today.)

Passingout to evaluate a new TV make sure that you truly understand the various resolutions and whether or not you really need it. For some getting the highest quality picture is a must, while for others just being able to watch regular TV is enough… Also, when going to your local outlet, make sure they accurately demo the true quality of the HD by having them tune in an HD signal to their TVs. Because the only way to truly evaluate the difference (and to appreciate high definition) between the TVs is to see all the models next to each other using the same “feed.”

Hopefully this isn’t too confusing…

Ok, so we’ve talked about resolution, but what does it mean?

Well, the HDTVs currently come in a variety of flavors from 720 to 1080 (there are lower resolutions but you really shouldn’t consider anything less than 720 and really no less than 1080 if you want great quality picture). Each of these resolutions come in an “i” and a “p” variety (in other words, you have 1080i 1080p, and the same thing over 720 resolutions).

If you only see the regular high-definition television (broadcast), 1080i, the highest resolution you can get. However, 1080p is the highest resolution that can still be on TV. For regular TV only 1080i is really no need to invest in 1080p if you plan on buying a Blu Ray (the most recent technology used to play) plan for some of the latest video games for Playstation /Xbox and want to enjoy the highest resolution, or simply to relax a bit 'of money and want to show your friends.

Resolution Feature Control Although there are other areas that can make a difference in image quality and a contrast ratio of the screen (glossy or anti-glare), brightness and others is fundamental to the quality of the images the difference between a regular TV and HDTV has a resolution of 1080 by a factor of six. In other words, a 1080p HDTVhas 6 times better image clarity than a regular television set.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of things you should know about before investing your hard earned money on a new HD TV set. Make sure you educate yourself and evaluate the various brands. There are the top brands such as Sony and Samsung and 2nd and 3rd tier brands as well. And while the specs look similar there can be a wide disparity between each television set. So buyer beware!
