For the longest time I had no TV. My twin Tiffany and I were raised all over the world by our old dad, a rock and roll roadie, songwriter, wine drinker and lover off all things wonderful. He gave us Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Madrid, introduced us to Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger when we were only little girls. He was the best, he was the greatest and he loathed TV.
He used to say there is no difference between watching the news, football, a sitcom or masterpiece theater — you’re sitting on your couch watching people in a box, who make a whole bleeping lot more money than you. Only he didn’t say bleeping. That was his way of saying, go out and live your life, don’t waste away your hours watching others.
However, my old dad loved the movies. No matter where we were, come the weekend, he took us to whatever silver screen was closest. I can’t tell you how many American movies I’ve seen dubbed into French and Spanish. My old dad loved a good movie.
And so do I. All my life I’ve lived without a TV, until now. At Costco I saw this Sony Bravia 40 inch TV and I really, really wanted it. But I have a small car and they don’t deliver. But Amazon does, so I ordered this baby, then went to Hollywood Video and got a subscription to their Video plan. Twenty-five dollars a month and you can rent all the movies you want. Such a deal.
However, I don’t have cable, don’t have Dish Network, don’t even have an antenna on my roof. No TV for me. Just movies. So Dad, if you’re reading this from wherever you are, don’t roll over in your grave, because when I turn out the lights at night and turn on this beautiful widescreen movie shower, it’s you I’m sitting with.

Xross Media Bar (XMB) On-Screen Menu System
Xross Media Bar is Sony’s Emmy Award2 winning on-screen navigation that provides quick access to various set up functions and features. For instance selecting different types of media is made fun and easy by scrolling horizontally across icons until you find the type of media you are looking for. After selecting the media type, a list of its content appears as vertical thumbnails. Key set up menus and features work the same way. The main benefit of the XMB is that users can navigate through on-screen menus without taking their eyes off of their TV.
DMe Compatibility
DMex compatibility allows the connection and operation of a whole new category of products that is being developed by Sony (sold separately). The first of these products is the optional BRAVIA Internet Video Link module.
BRAVIA Theatre Sync
BRAVIA Theatre Sync reduces the hassle and time consuming job of powering up, changing the signal routing, and adjusting other functions to the simple push of one button. All you need to do is to connect BRAVIA Theatre Sync capable products to each other via one HDMI cable. The rest is easy. For instance, the One Push Play function activates by touching the play button on the remote and BRAVIA Theatre Sync takes over from there. The BRAVIA Home Theatre System and TV turn on. The DVD input on the BRAVIA Theatre system and TV activates. The TV mutes. And finally the DVD plays. There are two other BRAVIA Theatre Sync functions – One-Push Theatre Settings, which provides optimal picture and sound settings for movies and One-Push System Shut Down for turning off the entire home entertainment system.
BRAVIA Internet Video Link
The first DMex product to be introduced to the market is the DMX-NV1 BRAVIA Internet Video Link module (sold separately). BIVL, as it is affectionately called, can stream available Internet video from select content providers directly to your TV with a broadband connection3 without the need for a PC.
S-Force Front Surround
S-Force Front Surround is a virtual surround sound experience made possible using just two front speakers in select BRAVIA models. To accomplish this, Sony spent several years studying how our ears work. Freeze Function

Refurbished TV. I received the set 5 days after I ordered so the shipping service was excellent. The warranty is only 30 days but the price was right and most electronic failures occur during the burn-in period so I am not too uncomfortable with short warranty. The TV has a broad selection of input and output connections including a headphone plug-in. The picture is clear and bright and audio volume and clarity are very good. I am using it as a bedroom TV with Dish Network. No problems with setup and the menu is pretty intuitive with extensive control selections. I have noted several reviewers have had problems coding their remote controls. My Dish Remote seems to work fine with the code 902. The supplied Remote is above average in features and the controls are laid out in a logical manner. There are dedicated buttons for the most used features so you don’t have to go to the menu for things like the sleep timer, Closed Caption or aspect ratio. I tried it with rabbit ears antenna and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the reception and the number of channels I could receive. I live about 30 miles north of Houston and the scan picked up 35 channels. About 25 channels were solid watchable signals. So far I would have to say I’m very pleased with my purchase.

Looking for a DVD player regionless You might think that only expensive units could have changed their regions. No! Wal-Mart offers a continuum of the region hackable DVD players under $ 100.
The recent purchase caused smiles in our house! The Durabrand PDV705 portable player was exactly what we wanted. It is compact, feature-rich, and within seconds, with a few clicks of the remote region 0 (all regions) isPlayer.
The device will have a number of DVD and CD formats including: DVD, Audio CD, CD-R/RW, MP3 CD, Kodak Picture CD, DivX, XviD and JPEG.
Do not let its size fool! The screen may be small (7 inches), but contains many functions in the smallest space. Many options are available only in units of competitors in the installation program can be accessed through buttons on the player pop-up lid.
Buttons on board includes: power switch (car) on the right side, the brightness,Color, sound, screen, subtitles, forward, back, volume, Back, Forward, Stop, Play, Pause, Setup, Directional (arrow) buttons, OK (input) and select Open.
If you have your S-video or coaxial cable, you can use the appropriate port for the DVD player to your TV or entertainment system to connect.
Although the Durabrand PDV-705 does not include headphones, comes with various accessories – including a battery that looks a lot better than mostexpensive units.
Accessories include: AC adapter, car adapter, cable TV, remote control, two AAA lithium-ion battery, user manual and product registration card and warranty.
Sleep audio program at night, use and share the plan of "game" and the tail up to 16 audio tracks from CDs or MP3. Another advantage is that the songs can be stored in separate folders, rather than the root of a largeDirectory.
Unfortunately, the sound is flat and metal with external speakers. Go to your headphones or earbuds, however, and you can enjoy stereo sound good.
Making Regionless
Turn on the unit.
Open the lid of the reader.
Enter the following number sequence on the remote control:
9 7 3 5
Use the arrow keys on the remote control to "0" for all regions.
Exit Setup.
Now we will be able to play DVDs from around the world in itsnew set units.
Region hack for most other DVD players can be found videohelp.com.
There is a link at the end of this article to a page with hacks for two units that are less expensive to sell at Wal-Mart.
