I recently purchased this tv about 2 weeks ago. I had about a 1 and a half month long process of comparing/contrasting tv’s. I compared the samsung 40 inch a550 to this one. only big difference is contrast ratio. 30,000:1 (samsung) 15,000:1 (toshiba). as well as price difference. I finally came to a final decision on the toshiba. I went to a local best buy and compared the toshiba to other top of the line lcd’s (sony, samsung). I virtually saw no difference in the picture. I also have my blu ray player hooked up via hdmi. COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!! the picture is awesome. my xbox 360 looks absolutely stunning as well. the reviews are true that the sound on this tv is not up to par. but not many lcd’s have great speakers because of the small size the speakers need to be to fit in tv. Which is why home theatre systems were invented, problem solved! I definetly recommend this tv to anyone looking to stay around th 0 range. its the best lcd you can purchase in this price range! I’d save yourself a 0 bucks or so and try out this toshiba! you will not be dissapointed!

This is my third Toshiba TV, sold one to make room for this one and still have a 50″ Rear Projection that has NEVER given me any trouble eight years running(Knock on wood). For the money — 42″ for ,019 including S&H from another web site, this is hands down … THE LCD to get. If your looking for LCD’s that is. Good picture quality with standard definition programming despite the poor standard def. signal we get from our cable company. I have seen reviewers complain about this TV’s standard definition picture, but you must realize the old addage … junk in = junk out. No TV can “clear up” a poor signal. Remember also that these TV’s are meant to be viewed from a distance, be sure to buy size appropriate for the room as too big means a grainy looking picture. Unbelievable, but in the case of High Def. TV’s … bigger isn’t always better a.k.a. size DOES matter!! This sets High Definition picture is incredible … looks 3D. Don’t worry about it being only 720P as cable providers (at least mine) are only feeding 1080i anyways and it fills this screen size nicely with excellent detail. You can count the blades of grass during PGA tournaments or watch the dust flying around each contestant during their post-performance review on American Idol(Somebody needs to dust out there in California!). If you want a High Def. set above 42″ in size, you’ll want 1080p capability to reduce possible pixelization. I don’t have Blue-Ray or the defunct HD-DVD to review but my 480p Progressive DVD player picture is very clean on this TV. If you buy a High Def. TV you ABSOLUTEY need a “High Def. Set-up Disc” such as AVIA, etc. Borrow one from a friend, maybe Netflix rents ‘em, or straight up buy one with the coin you saved buying this tv. These DVD’s help tune in the picture as most TV’s are sent out of the factory with extreme color saturation and brightness (an attempt to stand out from the crowd in the showroom). And you ABSOLUTELY have to somehow get High Def. content running through this TV such as “Over-the-air” rabbit ears, HD cable box, HD satellite box, Blue-Ray player, or the now-defunct HD-DVD player. Not doing so should be listed as one of the seven deadly sins… Failure to provide a high tech., high def., flat screen LCD TV an appropriate signal!!!! PS- Always connect equipment with the highest level connector available to you. Ex- If your cable provider box has an HDMI output … use it. You’ll get the best picture that way. And don’t be fooled by “Monster Cables” for HDMI cables (or any other cables for that matter). Unless you have a “Theatre Rooom” and spell and call it such … you’re an average joe or jane like me. That means go to a web reseller (mycablemart, ect.) and buy an HDMI cable for $ instead of $$$$$. A digital signal is either there or it’s not, no such thing as “signal degradation” like an analog connection.

As for “problems” other reviewers are having here … 1)Yes, they’re right, these speakers can’t handle a lot of bass. My old analog TV couldn’t either. They’re simply not made for a wide range of acoustic, Not too many TV speakers are.
2) Delay in start up … read the manual people! States that is a power saving energy star feature that CAN be set off for instant power up.
3)Sluggish remote … I do have to agree with this one a little, not extreme though. And when sun is glaring toward it (Infrared Radiation) it does have a less of a remote “field of vision”. Ehhh, I draw the blinds then and it just makes the picture look that much better

A general rule of thumb for selecting the right size television screen is that the screen width–not its 42-inch diagonal measurement–should be between three and five times the optimum viewing distance, such as the distance from the TV screen to where your eyes are while sitting on the couch. Less than that and you may be distracted by the scan lines of the picture. More than that, and you may lose the detail of your TV. I installed this tv a few days ago. It replaces a 2000 Daewoo that served me well for 9 years. I was forced to upgrade my television because my cable provider started pulling good channels off of regular cable and putting them on digital. I tried to install the new cable box to the Daewoo but that tv had no inputs other than the cable input (I was already using an RF converter box and thus was approaching cable overload). So I reluctantly ended up buying the Toshiba 22AV500U here. After all of the work and money, I must say that I am pleased with the results. Digital cable is fun and has a lot of features and all of my shows have never looked clearer or sharper. I am also enjoying watching my dvds on the Toshiba tv. You have not seen Polar Express until you’ve seen it in high definition!

The Toshiba is high quality. I have no dead pixels and no backlight bleed. I did have an issue with the stand not moving when I first pulled it out of the box but that was because I wasn’t pulling hard enough (you never know how delicate these modern electronics are). I also ended up calling Toshiba customer support a few times. Each time I talked to someone knowledgeable and helpful.

As for the size, I have found 22 inches to be more than adequate. I have a smallish entertainment center and didn’t want to upgrade that too. The tv is in a rather large living room and there isn’t a bad seat in the room.

I also should mention that at work my Dell lcd monitor made me so sick that I had to go back to the old crt monitor. The issue I think is that lcds are lit by a florescent bulb. Because florescent bulbs flash like a strobe light they can sometimes make you feel ill when you stare into them. I have had no issues with that with my Toshiba.

I also highly recommend that you use an hdmi cable between your dvd player and the Toshiba (and everywhere else you can too). I bought mine here on Amazon for a few dollars (the 6 ft 1080p cable by DVI Gear). It is an excellent cable. What the local stores charge for the same thing is quite scandalous.

We moved into a new house and were on a mission to buy 3 televisions. After looking at all the televisions out there in our price range, and looking at all the displays next to each other, this one instantly popped out at us. I know we aren’t supposed to judge a tv when it’s next to a bunch of others, but I couldn’t help looking at all the other ones and how my eyes just kept coming back to this model. The blacks seemed darker, deeper and the colors were more vivid and crisper. I ended up buying three 52″ for the house. I’ll start of by saying that the picture is beautiful. It has full side inputs and a lot of rear inputs. One thing to mention is if you are hanging it, the rear inputs are almost impossible to reach and since they point straight back and not downward, there may be a problem with some cabling. Toshiba, like any other manufacturer, put their light up logo right in front and under the screen so it’s in the way when you are watching tv, however, they were smart enough to allow you to turn it off. The control on the tv isn’t great – it feels cheap and doesn’t light up, but does glow in the dark. Changing between channels is pretty quick, not like some tv’s where you have to wait a couple seconds. Watching Planet Earth on BluRay is excellent, except when there is quick panning, such as when they pan to follow a hawk, you can notice some jitter because the refresh rate isn’t as fast. I haven’t seen a football game on it yet so I don’t know how that looks. The sound is not very good, but then again I am not sure of many tv’s that have great sound. I have to really turn up the volume in order to hear it clear. It does have different picture modes such as sports, theater, store, etc. I find store to be the brightest, most vivid and yet retain some really deep blacks, however, this mode is not energy compliant. The tv itself is very sexy. It features a matte screen and it’s anti-glare is very good, expecially in our master bedroom where windows are next to and in front of where the tv hangs. The casing is a glossy black which does tend to gets fingerprints when touching it. Overall, I think this tv is well worth the price and you will be very happy with the picture quality. Take it from someone who owns 3 of them!

We’ve had the Toshiba REGZA 37RV530U HDTV for about 3 months now. We got it to replace an old 19 inch TV which was just too small for our new bedroom viewed mostly from around 15-20 feet away. The upgrade to 37 inch was dramatic, we can actually read the DirecTV guide from bed now!
Picture quality on the 37RV530U with our DirecTV Satellite receiver (digital, standard definition) has been very nice after some adjustments, which this TV has plenty of. The surprise has been the over the air High Definition local stations (720p), which look superb on this TV. I attached an old bow tie type antenna we had, not expecting much, but surprisingly we receive most of the local SF Bay area stations in HD. It was a pleasure watching Olympics late night from bed in HD!
This TV also has a VGA input for attaching PCs, which works well for a TV. Have not tried anything at 1080p yet. I wish it had picture in picture, but most LCD HDTVs don’t. Overall been very happy with this purchase, well done Toshiba.
For those who might want to save some money, you can go with a 720p HDTV and not sacrifice much unless you have a blueray player or a PS3.

UPDATED JULY 2009!: After barely 6 months of use this LCD actually blew out. We were watching television and all of a sudden everything went black… completely black. Resetting, unplugging and even praying didn’t work! Luckily it was still under warranty and they came in a few days ordered a new screen and had it installed within a week. The total would have been 1500 hundred out of pocket if it weren’t for the warranty. INSANITY!! Honestly, after scouring the internet I have come across the same issue repeatedly where people are stuck with this paperweight. Toshiba seems to not manufacter quality products that can make it past the first 12 months. The only upside was that there was a service center 10 minutes away and everything was in-home (from the initial inspection to the actual work)… that was a plus not having to lug around the television. You will need to have a dated receipt within 12 months and they will take pictures for service.

I had purchased this set back in February 2008 and wanted to review after having it for awhile.

This set with DVD player was purchased for our bedroom. The picture quality is gorgeous and vibrant. We have just moved and until we get our 42 inch Panasonic on the wall we have been using this one in the living room. It more than suffices! It looks amazing, that I could see someone using this one as a main tv if the room isn’t too large.

Unlike other LCDs, this one does not turn dark or grayed out when viewed from different angles. The picture quality is amazing. The colors are vibrant and bright and I feel as if it is able to get a “true black”.

As far as the DVD player… the reality is we have used it about 2 times; so I cannot review on the dependability. I have read and experienced that Toshiba DVD players love to conk out.

The frame is very sleek and sexy, just don’t touch it with your oily fingers! I wish I had purchased two when they were on sale because I can no longer find the combos anywhere.

Again, if you can find it for a good price, jump on it. You will not regret it. Also wanted to mention that this set picks up an unbelievable amount of HD channels (about 90) without a cable/satellite box. We have service, but we always love to test the capability of the television.

I’ll start with saying that this is my first LCD TV, I already had a 29″ 720p Samsung HDTV Slim fit tube TV and is still going. But the 40″ looks awsome in my living room, I got this TV for a great deal, it has 1080p and has great sound unlike other LCD TV sets, I have it hooked up to a small 2.1 system for when watching games or a movie, but for regulat TV watching the speakers are just fine, I haven’t tried a bluray movie on it as I’m still waiting for my Bluray laptopSony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S 15.5-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) to arrive. The only feature I don’t like about this is the Dynalight control, it keeps changing the brightness of the image depending of what you’re watching, not sure who thought of this idea but the effect is awfull, fortunatelly this is an option you can disable. All things considered this is a great TV set at an affordable price, not sure if a few hundred dollars for all those fancy options would make a noticeable difference, I’m very happy with my purchase and would definately recommend to anyone looking for a 40″ 1080p LCD TV, plus I trust that being a Toshiba set it will last, will update the review if anything goes wrong, I’ve had it for 2 months now.
